I really enjoyed this movie. Very funny and great for all ages. I don't go to movies often but this was loads of fun. I've never seen "The Office", but Steve Carell was quite funny. The scenery was beautiful. Steve Carell was wonderful. The special effects done with the animals was very impressive. As always Morgan Freeman was exceptional. Wanda Sykes was incredible, great one-liners throughout. The writers did a great job on this one. I laughed quite a bit. The Director Tom Shadyac really told the story well.No Jim Carry needed. Just "do the dance". Enjoy <more>
watching the movie, take the whole family and be prepared to laugh out loud.
I recently attended a preview and found this movie uplifting, hopeful and extremely satisfying. The comedic timing was perfect and casting was great. The constant collision between the ancient and the modern kept the audience in stitches. Ridiculous events such as Evan's unsuccessful attempts to maintain his clean-cut appearance were absurd but Carell made it seem believable and hilarious. The denouement was a wild and crazy surprise that literally sailed right to the heart of what it takes to "make a difference". Morgan Freeman was great at maintaining his aloof yet omnipresent <more>
character. It is a fun and inspirational family film. I think it is sure to be a blockbuster so enjoy it. F.Y.I. I've not seen Bruce Almighty nor had it piqued my interest but I think I might have to see it now.
Evan Almighty: Morgan Freeman second time quite timely! (by mgoldhamer)
A good PG rated family film comedy beats everything out there hands down! Director Tom Shadyac has come up with a film that offends no one and anyone can come away with a great belly laugh and a good feeling all at the same time. The American Family has been shown to be at it's weakest when the children begin to question the logic of one or both of the parents. In Evan Almighty it is the father who begins to throw caution to the wind to gain back the trust and faith of his three sons. His wife questions his strange back to nature methods until she too joins the family tree. Here in the <more>
family is 'reborn' and the laughter never stops! The humor in Evan Almighty is most similar to the film, The Incredibles. While your children are laughing at one joke, you as an adult will be laughing at the punch line which follows the previous jocularity. Your children will believe you are laughing at the same joke that they are but the pun is on them. Parnethood puns partiality preclude precise palindrome. In other words let us all enjoy a good bit of tomfoolery at the movies and let no one be the target of the joke!
Ludicrous of course but a great time all the same... all age movie! (by hoove1970)
Transfixed..... We all sat there at this sneak preview transfixed waiting for the next joke.... eating up all Steve Carrel and the rest of the supporting cast could dish out! The all gave sparkling performances. It was loads of fun for the whole family this time around for the "Almighty" team. I have to give it up to the writers on this one for keeping it very clean without sacrificing really good one liners and "adult" innuendos. There were a few problems with the 'over the top' dramatizations involving every animal on the planet. You were trying to <more>
""suspend your disbelief" while all the while all to 'real' laws and political actions were taking place. It would have been just fine to have the local wildlife show up. It wasn't in the same realm of realism to have exotic wildlife show up and not be hauled away immediately by animal control, while at the same time trying to pass all to real legislation. The movie drove home two main points. I mention them now just in the hope that if you don't see this movie, you at least got a little education here. One; any Act of Random Kindness is a great thing. Two; Careful what you wish for, it may just come true and you need to be prepared for that possibility!Everyone should at least like this film, many will love it especially if your over 35 or so but at least see it and let it pass it's message on to you in some way.Peace.... to us all
My original Title for this review was "OMG! What a Cast + Actors too!" Which may have been a bit too tacky considering the feedback I have received.WHen I went to see this movie, I was expecting a sacrilegious slapstick comedy. I was satisfied with sufficient sight gags and cheap humor that kept it funny, but did not destroy serious moral lessons or reminders in the Plot. The importance of supportive family, respect for our "God-Given" environment, Faith, Integrity, the price of corruption. But I found myself MORE awe-struck with the grand scale of the Ark and the <more>
Animals.I had a wonderful sense of the Scale of the Original Noah's Ark, and felt connected to the historical significance of this massive construction task with Biblical era tools. I was amused and amazed at the range of animal scenes, especially the humor in their contributions to Ark building. A comedy of immense scale and record cost, but well worth it.Congrats to all the major players, who did not disappoint me from previous Roles, Especially Morgan Freeman, John Goodman, Lauren Graham, Steve Carell in that order. No disrespect to the Newer or Younger players, where I had no Expectations -- all fine for their roles. So, enjoy the Humor, Love the Animals, Admire the Actors, Identify with the Struggles and Doubts of the Characters, be Redeemed in the underlying Themes, and above all, for God's Sake, See it on the Big Screen!
A decent movie, very well made! Stop winning people. (by nsterjo)
OK, Bruce Almighty was one of a kind, good and funny. Evan Almighty is not Bruce Almighty, we gathered that. Question, why would we expect it to be? For once I am glad this movie took a slightly different direction to be something more than a mere sequel, and I believe they have totally done it. It doesn't even feel like there was a Bruce Almighty before it, if it wasn't for Morgan Freeman who is always great to see. And yes, Steve Carrell is not Jim Carrey, yet who cares? Jim Carrey is good but he is overrated. I don't like Steve Carell really , and wasn't expecting much from <more>
him or this movie to be honest after having seen this summer's sequels and "blockbusters", but boy am I glad to be able to come in here and leave a positive comment. This movie totally did it for me. Maybe it wasn't as funny as B.A. but it was funny enough. It was well built, the script and the plot felt complete enough, the acting was very good, the effects great. Most importantly, I followed the entire movie without being annoyed or getting bored, and I even laughed a lot. And the ending, oh I just loved the ending. The kind of climax that Superman Returns so desperately needed but lacked poorly. Now, there were some little things that raised questions or seemed forced, like "How come there were so many kinds of animals just in that specific forest; while it was obvious that only that area was in need of saving, and not all the animals or beings of the world". But, that's the kind of things you can let slip by, 'cause it's just not that relevant. I had read bad reviews about it beforehand, and wasn't expecting much, but they were really wrong. I am not afraid of going too far when I say that even though I liked all the other great movies of this summer like Pirate of the Caribbean 3, or Spiderman 3, or Fantastic 4 etc, they lacked what this movie gave me, a feeling of completion and satisfaction. I was able to honestly say in the end: "I liked it" which I haven't said once this summer. I don't know why so many people are giving bad reviews about this film; it's a good one and they're just being too harsh and expecting I don't know what. Go see this movie and try to enjoy it without prejudice. Trust me, you will. In the end; I would give this movie a 7.5 or 8 score but only because I think most of the bad reviews in here are unfair, I'm giving it a 9. Tung!
Think of it as a Light-Hearted Religious Epic, rather than a comedy (by hellokristen)
If you go expecting to see a gut-busting laugh-out-loud comedy like the usual Jim Carrey-Tom Shayac production, you'll be disappointed. But it also doesn't have the bathroom humor -- a relief to me. But INSTEAD I suggest you think back to those great religious epics of the 1950s -- but with many light-hearted moments instead of the heavy melodrama those movies had . I think then you can just sit back and enjoy this movie.Steve Carell is a master of subtle comedy -- the comedy of character nuances. He's not a big broad over-the-top comedy actor like Jim Carrey. So it's not <more>
really fair to compare him to Jim and the Ace Ventura movies. It must be a lot of pressure on him: "You're the star of the most expensive comedy ever made! Talk out of your butt or something!" They have him doing some slapstick while clumsily building the ark, but it isn't really funny. The film is stocked with expert comedy actors, but only Wanda Sykes got any laughs out of the audience. But then, it's said Wanda Sykes can get laughs just reading a phone book. Sadly John Goodman is wasted as "the heavy". Over the closing credits, you see a moment of him comic dancing and you remember how funny this guy is. I was amazed to find tears rolling down my cheeks about halfway through -- when God disguised as a waiter has a little talk with Evan's wife who thinks her husband has lost his mind . It happened a few more times till the end.So if you turn off your laugh-o-meter expectations and just look at it as a sweet story of faith with a few smiles and a lot of delightful animals and some great disaster effects, you'll enjoy it.
You can take your kids to this movie (by wfgwilliams)
I haven't seen Bruce Almighty. Unlike just about everyone else who went to this movie I had nothing to compare it with and no expectations based on the earlier movie.I have a feeling what people were expecting was a frenetic, high strung, giddy, laugh a nano-second experience. If that is what you are expecting, then you will be disappointed. What I was expecting was based on what I saw in the trailers for this movie - ordinary guy is visited by God, God tells him to build an Ark, the guy's beard and hair grow and animals show up. I was also expecting some funny stuff. The film delivers <more>
on story, on character, on relationships. It has an element of menace and anticipation. It has funny stuff and it has heart. It is also a movie you can take your kids to, which is kind of rare these days.I really enjoyed this movie. Set aside your Jim Carrey expectations and you may enjoy it, too.
I saw Evan Almighty recently at a screening in Charlottesville, Virginia. I was expecting a trifle of a summer comedy aimed mostly at children given the PG rating and all the animals. Instead, what I saw was an extremely funny and even touching movie. The writing was crisp, the pacing non-stop, and the visual effects were first-class. There's plenty of physical comedy by Steve Carell, particularly in his montage as a novice boatwright, and lots of one liners from Wanda Sykes and funny animals to keep you consistently laughing out loud. The real surprise is that between all the laughs, <more>
there are valuable messages without being preachy about human stewardship of the planet, love of family, and how prayers are actually answered. Adults will love this movie as much as kids.
