I am having problems with the critics of this film. What do they want? A moon on a stick. A film is set in Antarctica, the first film you think of is John Carpenter's The Thing. We know White Out is not going to be The Thing, but is an opportunity to revisit that territory, that isolation, those particular set of difficulties. In terms of setting The Thing was one of Carpenter's best, but White Out does it better. Antarctica looks more threatening. The destructiveness to human tissue is more palpable. In fact there are related scenes where a central character is struggling to stay <more>
attached to the guide rope while the weather comes down and reduces visibility to inches. The White Out scene is more affective. We have much more populated Antarctic base. People lead a privileged life in space age rooms and corridors. The equipment and facilities are sophisticated. At first we are reassured that Man has a better grip on this dangerous continent. The characterisation is warm. The more personal face to face scenes are finessed well.I cannot understand why people would choose to watch a film like this and then end up being disappointed. What were they expecting? What film of this type would have satisfied them? This is the opposite of a Michael Bay flash bang CGI overload film. It's more sedate. It's not trying to wake you up every ninety seconds. They say Tarantino averages three films a day. I watch tons, especially in the sci-fi, mystery, suspense, chiller and thriller categories. I am convinced that this film is way above average.
Well, I love It! A Very underrated Action mystery thriller! (by ivo-cobra8)
Whiteout 2009 is very underrated mystery action thriller. Well I love Kate Beckinsale I am the biggest fan of her and watching this movie was just awesome. This film get's a lot of bad things, it is very underrated and bashed from fans and critics. The same that is bashed film is D-Tox aka Eye See You 2002 with Sylvester Stallone, they are both very bashed. This film is action thriller with Kate Beckinsale and Tom Skerritt, been on Antarctica after it was the first murder happened and the body was found. U.S. Marshal Carrie Stetko is assigned to the case she goes deeper in to a murder <more>
mystery while she fights off the killer, who try's to kills her on every step she goes. Well I was very pleasantly surprised by this movie. I heard so much bad things about it that I expected the worst. The movie begins and is pretty fast paced and you really get caught up in the story. The actors are all doing there job well, but not worthy of any awards. I love this film and sorry you don't like it, but I love it!!! The film is fast paced, is not boring, is not to long and is not lame! Kate Beckinsale and Tom Skerritt did a wonderful job and the acting in this movie was great. This movie reminds me of The Thing, only no alien monster, but a monster of a human being killing people off and essentially wanted to get to Kate's moment. The dead of winter setting makes for a decent thriller, but the fact that the movie is a little predictable and offers no real juicy ending. Action-mystery in the style of a horror-mystery flick! The movie itself is fairly entertaining. There are some good action scenes and the snowy atmosphere adds a lot of charm. Kate Beckinsale is good as usual, although the story could have used a little more work. The basic plot about this movie is: Carrie Stetko, the lone U.S. Marshal assigned to Antarctica, is investigating the continent's first murder, which draws her into a shocking mystery. Now, with only three days until winter, Carrie must solve the crime before Antarctica is plunged into darkness and she is stranded with the killer. It does involves killing people on Antarctica, a big winter storm, dead body is found on an ice, the mystery need to be solved. The plane crash in the opening scene was awesome, you found on the end of the film what was all about. Who done those killings and why. There is not one killer there are two. I wish there would be more actors in it, but it was a cheap low budget film. That did do a good job and the film was very good. The film is Antarctic thriller with chills and thrills. I love this movie and I will always enjoy it. Been a Kate Beckinsale fan it is a worth of see and I own it on Blu-ray. It is my favorite film of all time and I love it. I had a fun with it! This is a very nice little murder mystery that just so happens to be set in Antarctica. The idea of murder down there with all that cold makes it a little tricky for our villains, but they show that it can be done. It stars Kate Beckinsale and Tom Skerritt, so what's not to like. Sorry out there. The supporting cast is great. To me what having a good movie experience is the fact that actors have to believe in the story line, and if that doesn't happen-in my opinion- you have a bad movie i.e, Oblivion. The only problem I have with the movie it is where did the diamonds come from? I <more>
People must have set their expectations too high (by fieldnstreamer)
Well last night I went and saw this movie. I didn't know a lot about it, and i have found that that is the best way to see a movie, because if you watch all the previews and get too hipped up about it, then you are most likely going to set your self up for disaster. My sister went with me and she was on the edge of her seat the whole time, and she isn't the type to get over excited about things.I've read where people left a lot of negative comments, but I don't understand what was so bad. First, the acting was not less than par and the movie portrayed a halfway accurate <more>
setting of what Antarctica is like. Sure they did lack a little bit of what would really happen with the lack of face protection, Kate's face would not have survived as well as it did when she went out without face protection in -60f temps.People that rated this movie as poorly as they did because of their disbelief in what its like to be in conditions like this, apparently have never been in conditions lie this. I've never been in -60 temps with 100 mph winds, but I've been in -50 temps with 40 mph winds, and its surviveable.
Okay, this isn't a Great movie. It's not even a great whodunit. But in a world where old Charlie Chan pot-boilers have a cult following, and boneheaded Spielberg spectaculars are considered works of genius, I'd say that Whiteout definitely has a place. What did I like about Whiteout? I loved the setting. ANY movie set in the confines of an Antarctic research station is okay with me. There aren't nearly enough of them! I loved the characters. Kate Beckinsale isn't in the front ranks of thespians, but she's a solid leading lady, and brings a good mix of likability, <more>
vulnerability and toughness to this part. The supporting characters are just fine as well. I loved the idea of setting an action-mystery in this odd locale, and I greatly enjoyed the way the mystery unraveled - predictable though it may have been. And I loved the various ways that the frozen environment is brought in as an element in the story. What did I hate? Not a thing. True, the cold is not treated realistically. Too many people walking around bareheaded and such. Yes, it's a dopey Hollywood convention. But in a little action flick like this one, I wasn't bothered - at all. Did I hate the acting? No. It was just right for this kind of film. Did I have problems with the writing? Okay... there were a few bits of logic that could have been tighter. But, again, no worse than in many movies that get a 10/10 from every blockhead on Earth. I won't itemize... this review is going to get enough down-checks as it is. Bottom line, Whiteout is a pile of fun. It's a 'genre' film, with few if any artistic pretensions. But it delivers the goods where it counts. I've watched it several times on DVD, and expect to enjoy it quite a few more. If you don't get it, go watch some Merchant-Ivory drawing room masterpiece, and we'll all be happy.
not as bad as some others trying to make you believe (by e-mail-42)
I do not think this movie is as bad as some of the other comments try to make you believe and without it being exceptional , in my humble opinion, it is just as good or bad if you want as 99% of the other Hollywood productions they make these days. However it might have helped that I have read the comic strip on which this story is based which might make it easier to follow the plot. The use of violence is not exaggerated like in some many contemporary movies and the setting in the Antartic does not change anything to the fact that surely there must have been similar scenarios in the past <more>
but it still very agreeable to look at. We sometimes forget that Antartica exists and this movie is a good reminder of that.
