It is magnificent . I didn't have much hope with it as the lead is not much on my radar but it had Ethan Hawke not in leading role , however in it so I decided to watch it . it was amazing . beautiful performances on a realistic story . it ain't shiny so you have to be patient for the story to unfold . nice drama . again , not a blockbuster .
Annie Hall meets The Kids are Alright (by andrewbunney)
Subtle, nice, funny, lovely, smart, wise & warm, this is a brilliant tale of relationships in our time. A young woman, Maggie, looks at her failures in coupling and decides to have a child alone, before hooking up with a married man, John. After a great barrage of conception gags, the film settles into a deeper exploration of blended family dynamics and good-girl behaviour.Maggie, Greta Gerwig Frances Ha, Mistress America , falls in love with John, Ethan Hawke Boyhood destroying his volatile marriage to the brilliant and difficult Georgette, Julianne Moore Almost Heaven, The Kids are <more>
Alright, Still Alice .Greta Gerwig plays a slightly deeper and more rounded young New Yorker than her 2 brilliant previous efforts & Ethan Hawke again creates a deeply flawed yet sympathetic father as he did in Boyhood. Julianne Moore entertainingly pushes the boundaries of her comfort zone as a fierce Danish academic in a supporting role. The trio's 3 children are also terrific.Set in NYC, you have to be reminded of Woody Allen and he'd be proud if he'd made this one; a brilliant piece of cinema in every way. Maggie's Plan is an original, timeless but contemporary story full of domestic tension, rich characters, interesting locations and beguiling images. The writer/director is Rebecca Miller, daughter of Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Arthur Miller Death of a Salesman, The Crucible, Streetcar Named Desire .I loved it for its intelligence and I laughed a lot right up until the satisfying ending. At 99 minutes it's taut, neat and spot-on with modern love issues. One of the year's best so far, 4 & ½ stars.
Maggie's Plan, the new film from writer/director Rebecca Miller, is an absolute joy of a film. What initially drew me to the film and more, or less convinced me to go out and see it at the theatre was because of it's star, Greta Gerwig. Over the past couple of years with the promptings and recommendations of a good friend, I have been introduced to Gerwig's work with her partner and fellow writer and director, Noah Baumbach. I haven't seen their work together on the film Greenberg yet, but films such as Frances Ha and Mistress America, were films I absolutely adored and made <more>
me an instant fan of Gerwig's writing as well as her very natural yet nuanced performances in the films. I have also found that Baumbach who in films such as Squid and the Whale and Margot at the Wedding, could be very bitter and cynical at times with his characters and screenplays, which is not a criticism as both Squid and Margot are very well done films, but since he has been paired with Gerwig as an actress as well as doing co-authorship of the films, I have found Baumbach's films to be a lot more playful and also have a certain feel of the French New Wave films of the 1960's as well as a certain freshness that captures the spirit and the times of today's generation of millennials as well as being totally and completely relatable and also a lot of fun and also very pleasant viewing material. What modern day twenty something could not relate to the aloof and sometimes despondent feeling of post secondary education life as well as trying to find a job and a name for yourself like what was done so brilliantly and effectively in Frances Ha? Gerwig, who I always find really seems to brighten any picture that she's in, does continue to do great work in Maggie's Plan also. The film has certain qualities that are somewhat relatable to her work with Baumbach, such as the naturalistic acting as well as being a twenty, or thirty something young adult who still has so much yearning and curiosity not only about herself, but the world around her and in this case the ever so complicated world and events of relationships comes into play. Here as in the other films, the characters are all very hip and modern and have a certain relaxed and at ease quality to them that I personally find quite charming and perhaps more accurate of today's generation of college and post college university students than the mainstream garbage that Hollywood is trying to capture. Trust this and other indies to do a much better job on that. While at times, Maggie's Plan seems to borrow from the usual standard ideas and plot devices that go with most romantic comedies, or films dealing with relationships, I am happy to say that I enjoyed this one ever so much more than the usual fare that is out there not just because of the absolutely well scripted and written characters, but also because like the other films I mentioned, the characters all have a very relaxed yet very likable charm to them which at times is absolutely radiating and it is hard not to either empathize with them, or feel total joy in watching their everyday lives because they are so carefree yet so human that it is easy to relate and have fun with them at the same time. All three main actors from Gerwig to Ethan Hawke and Julianne Moore are all terrific here and they all continue to show what great actors they are in general and how their performances are elevated so much more by a great script and a very capable director. The film has fun with it's look at relationships and the things that make them complicated, but also the things that we all probably look for in life and in love with other people. There are certainly good times and bad and it is all chronicled here in perfect order and there is always a certain joy and optimism, especially with Gerwig's character that I found to be absolutely infectious and kept me in a continued almost happy like bliss while watching her and her character. This is a very insightful films on life and love that proves to be a lot better than the run of the mill stuff we usually see at theatres and it is so much better than that and also a lot of fun as well. Terrific writing, performances and direction make Maggie's Plan so much better than I thought it would be and yet it comes out as one of this year's best hidden gems and one that deserves to be sought out and seen by others who are curious, or enticed about anything I mentioned above.
This is one of the view romcom movies that is actually surprising. I would recommend this movie on a rainy day. It is a feel good movie in a not cliche way.
Cheerful and Cheering Screwball Comedy (by billmarsano)
"Maggie's Plan"is a screwball comedy. Of screwball comedies, the less said the better unless. Could anyone summarize 'Bringing Up Baby,' and what would it mean if he succeeded? All you need to know is that Maggie Greta Gerwig hears her clock ticking and decides to have a baby husband or no. As the case is NO, she finds a donor and self- inseminates; and then everything goes to hell in a hilarious handbasket, which is to say there is an endless series of complications as the nest-laid plans of Maggie and pals gang agley about as aft as possible. Gerwig's terrific <more>
and so is everyone else: Ethan Hawke, Julianne Moore, Maya Rudolph and some winsome kids.
Greta Gerwig as "Maggie" an independent woman bakes up a plan to become a single mother and in the process 'the plan' works but then backfires and puts her into a situation 'the plan' did not include - marriage.Gerwig gives a charming performance as Maggie steering a course through a relationship with a overly analytical writer once divorced husband, raising her three year old child, working her job as an instructor in a local college, and realizing her husband is still in love with his first wife! Maggie is in a pickle so she devises another plan! The setting is <more>
the New York City intellectual society living in row houses and meeting in cafe's to socialize. The cast includes Bill Hader, Ethan Hawke, Maya Rudolph, Julianne Moore, Wallace Shawn. This is a simple 'slice of life' type story about modern people looking for and finding happiness and direction in their life. It's probably a film more appreciated by a viewer that likes a romantic flavor in a story that looks into the feelings and emotion in the human spirit. This is a cheerful light story that includes just a touch of sorrow mixed into a picture of mostly happy people getting on with life. And don't forget the pickles!
I love everything Greta Gerwig does. Her latest treat is superb. Well cast-excellent script-and the pace is perfect. There is not a dull moment. There is also not a really exciting moment..but that is Greta's style. Subtlety..with clever pretense..clever dialogue..clever situations..clever..clever...clever..And, as always, it's Gerwig's persona that is so uniquely compelling. Let me repeat..Greta Gerwig is a very unique persona, unique in a very delightful way. That innocent, humble, honest, center is surrounded by an aura of enlightenment that somehow makes her a bit of a lovable <more>
sage. Several of Greta's starring roles/movies resemble Woody Allen's style. This is no coincidence. And, give Greta another pat on the back for actually being more entertaining..more clever than..the Woodster. There aren't any really laugh out loud moments..no, much too subtle for that, but, after digesting the entire flic, one is left with a satisfied, entertained- BURP ! In fact, I give this movie 4 of 5 burps. Thanks Greta Gerwig. Give us another tasty helping...soon!
